Mechitza Main Structure

When designing the wood structure for a mechitza or room divider, you must consider the layout. Are there any turns or corners? Will it be a permanent structure in the building or portable. If portable, how often will it move and does it need to be on wheels? How much space do you have for storage? How far can the legs stick out for stability or should the base be tapered?

What heights would you like? Most portable mechitzas are divided into 4’4″ lengths or shorter, which is the ideal breakdown of materials and easy portability. For height, most communities choose between wood/top material at 3′ for women’s view at sitting position or 4′ at standing position. Total heights are generally 6′ or lower.
